Voter Registration

Voter Registration

What does this measure?

The percentage of the voting-age population (18 and over) that is registered to vote.

Why is this important?

Voting is a basic right of all citizens. Registration indicates the citizenry's interest, commitment and belief in the value of participating in our political process.

How is our county performing?

In 2017, 88% of voting-age Erie County residents were registered to vote, more than the statewide rate of 83%. From 2000 to 2017, the county's voter registration rate fluctuated, peaking in presidential election years and declining afterward. The rate, however, has increased steadily since 2011. Pennsylvania's voter registration rate also varied during this period.

How do we compare to similar counties?

Erie County had a higher voter registration rate in 2017 than Broome County, NY and Luzerne County (both at 80%) and Stark County, OH (86%). Broome was the only county where the rate was lower than in 2000 (a decrease of 8 percentage points). Unlike Erie, Stark County consistently had voter registration rates above 90% from 2004 to 2010 before experiencing a decline.
