Economy Overview
Like many communities, our economy has changed. Many of our large home-grown companies of the past have moved or vanished. While the percent of our jobs in the manufacturing sector remains high, it has declined significantly over the past decades. Erie is increasingly evolving into an “Eds and Meds” community with the tourism, service and nonprofit sectors also on the rise.
Our businesses, and our entrepreneurs, are now competing in a global economy. Within the U.S., Pennsylvania is often at a competitive disadvantage. Venture and investment capital remains a challenge. Employer complaints about the qualification and training levels of our workforce exist alongside increasing rates of poverty and unemployment.
