People with Asthma

What does this measure?

The percentage of adults in a region who currently have asthma.

Why is this important?

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that can cause episodes of wheezing, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and coughing. This condition can be aggravated by air pollution.

How is our county performing?

In 2017, 9.2% of adults in Erie County had asthma. Erie's asthma rate in 2015 (9%) was similar to that of Pennsylvania (10%). The county rate increased from 7% in 2012 to 10% in 2014, while the state rate has been flat since 2012.

How do we compare to similar counties?

Erie's asthma rate in 2015 was similar to Luzerne County, PA at 10%.

Notes about the data

State- and county-level data are from state health departments. All Erie County data from after 2015 are from the Erie County Department of Health. The data come from a survey designed to collect scientific data on health risks and behaviors.

Beginning in 2011, the Centers for Disease Control made two changes to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System on which this indicator is based. The survey now includes cell-phone users, and a new statistical method is used to weight responses. Therefore, data prior to 2011 is not displayed.
