Keeping our Best and Brightest

The Vital Signs partners continue to work hard on the issue of Brain Drain. “From the Brain Gain conference and numerous follow-up workshops, we know we have an issue attracting young people,” said Anne Sekula, vice president of Programs. “National best practices research indicates communities that successfully attract young adults reflect tolerance and inclusiveness, a wide range of ways to grow and promote talented individuals, and pride in unique community assets. Additionally, a business climate that supports innovation and entrepreneurs promotes Brain Gain vs. Brain Drain.”

The Vital Signs partners have culminated the research and dialogue into a full report, which has four main focus areas:

  • • Focus One: Engage diverse individuals and newcomers into networks and interest areas
  • • Focus Two: Expand community service and leadership opportunities for young adults
  • • Focus Three: Develop a unified brand and marketing message for Erie aimed at returning natives and young people
  • • Focus Four: Address and improve the aesthetics of downtown Erie and the rest of the community

“Within each of the focus areas, the group brainstormed and prioritized the top ideas calling for action,” Sekula added. “We discussed not only the challenges but the solutions too.” From the focus approach, twenty key ideas immerged including priorities to develop an international market place run by new immigrants and refugees; to create a collaborative university internship and community service center; to market Erie as a college town; to reprogram native Erieites to positively promote Erie and to develop downtown into a vibrant arts, nightlife and culture district. The Vital Signs partners will follow up with identified individuals and likely groups to work on these issues. If you are interested in acting on any of these ideas, please call 814-454-0843 or email Anne Sekula.
