Educational attainment in Erie County has fluctuated over the past four years. Generally, attainment levels are classified into four broad categories: less than a high school graduate, high school graduate (including equivalency), some college or associate’s degree and a bachelor’s degree or higher. Clearly, a county would like to see trend lines of “less than high school graduates” decreasing and the other three categories increasing.
From 2005 to 2008, Erie County made no progress towards decreasing the percentage of residents with less than a high school diploma or GED. Among 18-24 year olds, the percentage of high school graduates dropped 12.5% from 2005-2008 while the percentage of with some college or associate’s degree increased 11.3%. In that same age category, the percentage of 18-24 year olds with a bachelor’s degree or higher increased 1.5%; however, from 2007 to 2008, Erie County experienced a 2.1% decrease.
When compared to the state and national trends, Erie County is comparable or better in the “less than high school graduate” and “some college or associate’s degree” categories. In 2008, Erie County was approximately 5% below the state and national average for high school graduates.
