LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
There are currently four LEED-Certified buildings in Erie County—three PNC Bank branch offices and the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. While the trend line is clearly headed in the right direction, Erie’s numbers are significantly less than other regions in the Commonwealth. That said, there are currently eight projects underway for LEED-Certification. They include: Asbury Woods Nature Center, Metzgar Admissions & Alumni Center, Erie Art Museum, Mercyhurst Residence Hall, Mercyhurst College Student Housing, Renaissance/Palace Centre’s, and two confidential projects.
While LEED-Certification is a good indicator to track and analyze, there are several other ways that both commercial and residential properties can become more environmentally sustainable. These include but are not limited to residential/commercial wind power, residential/commercial solar power, and weatherization. While these activities are likely taking place all over the Erie region, they are extremely difficult to accurately track.
NOTE: As of July 2009, the Commonwealth of PA had 157 LEED-Certified buildings, third in the nation behind California and Washington.
