Health Indicators / Adult Health

Binge drinking is defined as having five or more alcoholic drinks on one occasion for males and four or more alcoholic drinks on one occasion for females. The number of Erie County adults who admitted to binge drinking at least once in the past month decreased from 25% in 2001 to 22% in 2004, and 21% in 2007. While the trend line is heading in the right direction, it should be noted that Erie County’s rates remain above the state and nation, and fall short of the 6% goal established by Healthy People 2010.

Within Erie County, those with the highest binge drinking rates are between the ages of 18-29 (43%). And, interestingly, binge drinking rates increase as education and income increase, highest in populations with some college (28%) or a college degree (21%), and those earning $50,000+ a year (24%).

An additional troublesome trend in this area is the increasing percent of adults who admitted to driving one or more times when they had too much to drink. This rate was 6% in 2007, as compared to 3% in 2004.
