Insurance status is a strong indicator of whether or not a person will access care in a timely and appropriate manner. Lack of health insurance often means a person does not seek care when needed, or they wait until the problem worsens, and seek care in an emergency setting rather than through a primary care provider. Lack of insurance is correlated with poorer overall health status and lower life expectancy.
In Erie County, the trend line is going in the wrong direction. While the state and national rates have increased as well, Erie County rates--which started lower than the state and nation—now exceed both.
Within Erie County, those with the highest rates of uninsured include males (22%), those between the ages 18-29 (33%) and those with incomes below $25,000 a year (35%).
