Smoking is harmful to your health. It is a proven cause of lung cancer. And yet, 26% of Erie County adults currently smoke cigarettes. In Erie County, smoking rates have steadily been above the state and nation for the last decade. And, while state and national rates have seen a slight decline since 2001, Erie’s trend line has remained constant.

Within Erie County, those with the highest smoking rates are between the ages of 18-29 (35%), those with less than a high school education (47%), and those earning less than $25,000 a year (37%).

Smoking by pregnant women is particularly harmful and can result in a low birth weight baby, as well increasing the baby’s chance for birth defects or other complications. And yet, 28% of Erie County mothers smoked during their pregnancy. This percent is up from 25.6% from the 1996-98 timeframe.
