Health Indicators / Child and Maternal Health

Health statistics for children in Erie County is limited. Overweight and obese statistics are available for children grades K-6 as part of the Growth Screens/BMI-For-Age Percentiles reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Health by education institutions.

Childhood obesity leads to early diagnosis of chronic diseases such as type two diabetes. Obesity also increases the risk for a heart attack or stroke later in life. Researchers project that because the damage is progressive and has started so early, this may be the first generation that has a shorter life expectancy than their parents. Additionally, researchers state that those with obesity or type 2 diabetes are more likely to have several traditional heart disease risk factors, including higher blood pressure, triglycerides, total cholesterol and “bad cholesterol” (LDL).
