Economic Indicators / Business Community

The overall business community in Erie County has seen a net growth in the number of business establishments in the past decade. This is due in large part to the substantial increase in health care establishments – the industry went form just under 700 establishments in 2001 to more than 1,900 in 2010.

While most other industries experienced a loss in the number of establishments, it is apparent that there are a few key drivers of Erie’s regional economy—both in number of establishments as well as jobs. The largest job-providing industry is Education and Health Services, employing 29,200 people in February 2012. Manufacturing is second, employing 21,500 people, and trade, transportation and utilities is third, employing 20,700 people in February 2012.
