Economic Indicators / Employment

Erie County unemployment rates have been higher than PA and the US for decades. Erie is not generating entrepreneurial activity consistent with the rest of the nation. Many of our major employers have relocated to other communities. The skilled labor we do have is aging and there are concerns about our ability to replace a retiring workforce. Those disturbing trends aside, Erie’s diversified economic base does give us an ability to weather the economic downturns. While our unemployment rates are above average, we have not experienced crises faced by other regions highly dependent upon a single employer or industry.

Employment and unemployment indicators are from the U.S. Department of Labor's Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program, which are updated monthly. The "Employment" indicator differs in very important ways from the "Jobn Growth" indicator that Erie Vital Signs also reports.
