While many other sectors of Erie’s economy have declined or hit a plateau in the past decade, the tourism and visitor-related category has experienced significant growth. This industry segment is a crucial driver of Erie’s regional economy, creating jobs and bringing in wealth from outside the region—a critical element for economic prosperity.
When compared to other counties in the “Great Lakes Region” – as defined by the Pennsylvania Tourism Office – Erie County is significantly higher in all analyzed categories (spending, jobs, wages and tax revenues). That said, all counties in the region experienced the same trend—slight decline in 2006 but substantial growth in 2007.
