Local Government Indicators / Airport

The number one metric used to evaluate airport usage is called enplanement or airport departures. Enplanement refers to the number of individuals that get on a plane in a particular airport. For the Erie International Airport, that number consists of individuals who board major airlines, commuter planes and chartered jets.

The Erie International Airport provides enplanement data since 2003. That data illustrates that best year recently has been 2005. Many variables impact why the enplanement number varies through the year. For example, ticket prices, flight availability and weather are some of these factors. Regardless of the specific reason, the trend is consistent with the fluctuations in the economy. In other words, when the economic forecast is positive, more individuals travel. Clearly, a region’s airport is intrinsically connected to the economy and regional impact of a region. Unfortunately, the situation is not remedied by just adding more passengers. Multiple issues like cargo, passenger weight and gas impact the number of passengers a play could carry.

The best way to increase enplanements, a goal for every airport, is to increase airport infrastructure. For Erie County, this will happen with the much awaited Erie Airport runway extension. The longer runway will support larger size planes and more planes, which is expected to lead to increased number of enplanements annually.
