The recycling effort in Erie County is led by the Erie County Recycling Program, an initiative of County Government. Erie County has experienced both positives and negatives in recent years in regards to recycling and composting. While total recycling dropped approximately 4 percentage points from 2007 to 2008, some of the positive elements include:
• Total county generation tonnage dropped 0.8%
• Substantial increases in both Residential & Commercial Single Stream recycling
• Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) tons collected increased 48%
• Total per capita HHWrecovery is 162% higher than the national average per capita generation
• Commercial recycling tons increased 62%
Ensuring that these positive trends continue and working towards the goal of 40% total recycling rates will be crucial to the environmental sustainability of the Erie region.
