Community Indicators / Voter Participation

The strength and prosperity of a region rely on engaged and involved citizenry. In Erie County, approximately 90% of eligible citizens (Erie County residents age 18 and older) were registered to vote in 2009. That is up approximately 8% from 2000, when just fewer than 82% of eligible citizens were registered to vote.

Of those eligible to vote, approximately 59.2% voted in the 2008 Presidential election – that turnout is down 3% from 2004 but up nearly 6% from 2000. Although experiencing a slight decline in 2008, Erie County’s voter participation tends to be higher than both the nation and Pennsylvania.
