What does this measure?

The number of children ages 3 or 4 enrolled in publicly funded high-quality pre-kindergarten education programs, expressed as a percentage of all children ages 3 or 4.

Why is this important?

Early emphasis on reading, numeracy and social skills prepares children to succeed in kindergarten and lays the foundation for success throughout their educational careers.

How is our county performing?

In 2017, 39% of Erie County 3- and 4-year-olds were enrolled in a pre-kindergarten program. This was 16 percentage points higher than the Pennsylvania rate of 23%. Erie County's rate more than doubled from 15% in 2007, while the state had a smaller increase of 7 percentage points during the same period.

How do we compare to similar counties?

Pre-kindergarten enrollment in Erie County was higher in 2017 than in Luzerne County, PA, at 24%. Erie had a larger increase since 2007 than Luzerne, where the rate rose 6 percentage points.

Includes the unduplicated count of PA Pre-K Counts, Head Start Supplemental Assistance Program and Child Care Works enrollments in Keystone STARS 3 and 4; Head Start; public school pre-k. This data is based on Pennsylvania-level data, therefore it is not possible to include comparable data for the nation or other areas in this indicator.
