What does this measure?

Commuting patterns of workers travelling into another ZIP for work or living and working in the same ZIP, by ZIP code. Additionally, the total number of employees in a ZIP and the total number of those employed within a ZIP.

Why is this important?

Commuting patterns can signify areas where there's a higher density of residential activity as compared to commercial or industrial. Additionally, this analysis can show which communities are commuter-based, and which are higher in worker whom live and work in the same area.

How is Erie County doing?

Analysis shows that geographically, the highest concentrations of workers appear in the 16509 ZIP code, with the Erie City and surrounding areas also being higher than the remaining county. The commuting analysis shows that those same areas see the highest densities of commuters both out of and into those areas for daily work. For those ZIP codes where workers both live and work in higher concentrations, they tend to be on fringes of the County, including 16428 (43%), 16407 (45%), and 16424 (31%).
